Waging the war in our hearts...

Sin is a Reality

by David Kyle 10/16/2014

Sin is a RealityIf you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles. Sun Tzu (Art of War)

This quote from the 6th century BC, Chinese general isn't biblical by any means, but there is a lot of wisdom in it.

In our case the enemy is our own sin corrupted heart, so to know it requires an outside view; one that is honest and accurate. Since we can't rely upon our own judgment and insight (Jeremiah 17:9) we must go to the God Who created us, we should cry out as Job did...

How many are my iniquities and my sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin. ~Job 13:23

God says a lot about sin in His Word and I found the most compelling is His own first mention of it found in Genesis chapter 4.

The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” ~Genesis 4:6,7

The picture God paints of sin for Cain to see is of a very real enemy poised to strike, an enemy with a purpose and the ability to carry it out. God also points out the enemy is NOT all powerful by calling on Cain to rule over sin and dominate it rather than the other way around.

There are at least seven truths or characteristics about our enemy sin we can note from God's warning to Cain, sin is:

  1. Reality
  2. Evil
  3. Near
  4. Powerful
  5. Ready
  6. Deceitful
  7. Hostile

- Sin is a Reality -

God warned Cain that “sin is crouching at the door” and “Its desire is for you.” God used the word “is” to describe the state of being for sin. Sin is so real the Apostle Paul called it a “law.”

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. ~Romans 7:21

and again...

but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. ~Romans 7:23

Sin is no hypothetical enemy or some abstract and generalized concept. Sin is real and sin is a law with bite. The puritan preacher John Owen described it this way:

“It [sin] is a powerful and effectual indwelling principle, inclining and pressing unto actions agreeable and suitable unto its own nature.”

Sin is the state of being in which we find ourselves. Next time we will look at how sin is evil and nearer than you think.

A Prayer: Self Knowledge

by David Kyle 10/14/2014

Because of SIN... Pray!Periodically I want to share with you a prayer concerning indwelling sin and our fight with it. These prayers come from the devotions and writings of various puritan preachers, pastors, and other godly men.

It is a good day to me when thou givest
me a glimpse of myself;

Sin is my greatest evil,
but thou art my greatest good;

I have cause to loathe myself,
and not to seek self-honour,
for no one desires to commend his own dunghill.

My country, family, church
fare worse because of my sins,
for sinners bring judgment in thinking sins are small,
or that God is not angry with them.

Let me not take other good men as my example,
and think I am good because I am like them,

For all good men are not so good as thou desirest,
are not always consistent,
do not always follow holiness,
do not feel eternal good in sore affliction.

Show me how to know when a thing is evil
which I think is right and good,
how to know when what is lawful
comes from an evil principle,
such as desire for reputation or wealth by usury.

Give me grace to recall my needs,
my lack of knowing thy will in Scripture,
of wisdom to guide others,
of daily repentance, want of which keeps thee at bay,
of the spirit of prayer, having words without love,
of zeal for thy glory, seeking my own ends,
of joy in thee and thy will,
of love to others.

And let me not lay my pipe too short of the fountain,
never touching the eternal spring,
never drawing down water from above.

From: The Valley of Vision, Arthur Bennet
